Some tops in your closet are easy to wear.
You can pull one out and immediately see several possibilities—different jeans, pants or skirts you can wear with it, different shoes that work, maybe a jacket or sweater you can add.
Then there are the tops you like, but never quite know what to do with.
They work with one particular pair of pants. Maybe one outfit. And when you want to wear them differently, you start looking for something else to buy to go with them.
The difference isn’t necessarily that you need better tops.
It’s that some tops work for your wardrobe and some don’t.
And learning to recognize the difference can change what you buy, how much you wear, and how many outfits you can create from the clothes you already own.

A top shouldn’t automatically require another purchase before you can get more use out of it.

That doesn’t mean every top needs to work with everything.

Here’s one place to start.
Look at the bottoms you actually wear most often—your jeans, pants, skirts or shorts.
Then look at your tops.
You might discover that one button-down works with three pairs of pants and two skirts, while another top works with only one pair of jeans.
That tells you something.
The goal isn’t to make every top work with every bottom. It’s to start recognizing which pieces give you options and which ones create another styling problem to solve.
What to Look for When Buying New Tops
Instead of seeing a top and only asking:
Do I like this?
Start asking:
What will I be able to wear this with?
Not what could theoretically work with it.
What in your wardrobe can you wear with it?
That one question can help you avoid bringing home another top that looks great on its own but leaves you searching for something else to complete the outfit.
